I wanted to create a guide for parents or teachers that would help them understand the Fairytale Tradition, how to approach Christian symbolism and meaning in fairytales, and practical ways to read fairytales with children. I believe the patterns in fairytales are reminiscent of patterns in the Bible and that fairytales prime children’s imaginations and affections in a way that helps them understand, appreciate, and long for God’s Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. This is an educational resource, but it is also meant to equip Christians for conversation around fairytales.

I write about fairytales and children’s literature within the Classical Christian Tradition on my substack. My Searching for Fairyland series explores themes, symbols, and histories of common fairytales, as well as Biblical and educational connections.

I have worked in Christian education for the past ten years, as a classroom teacher, school librarian, and academic specialist. I am greatly inspired by the fairytale philosophy of George MacDonald, and two of my favorite children’s fantasy stories are The Hobbit and The Wind in the Willows.

I believe fairytales draw children and adults alike into the mystery and splendor of the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. I desire to help others delight in the rich stories of our past, for they teach us about God, mankind, and the world both seen and unseen.

✍️ About the Author

My name is David W Ebel. After an incredibly difficult beginning, I was dying and was involved in a medical experiment hoping to keep me alive. The experiment became illegal to humans just 4 months because the side effects included birth defects including malformed bones and muscles, dwarfism, sterility and 100% mortality by 20. Add to that Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 6 causing me chronic pain that increased with age.

Being the smallest kid in the school, being the target of bullying till 12th grade, not being able to do any sports made me feel like I had to hide my pain trying to fit in. Graduating at 16, I started college on a disability scholarship and lasted 3 semesters of me trying to be “normal” and having a nervous breakdown. The college arraigned to freeze my scholarship and allowed me to leave without penalization. What I thought they were saying was “You are a failure, a loser and a disgrace” which spun my pain driven depression to new depths.

My friends thought I needed to relax and took me to a bar and month of that involvement ended up with me being able to drink all my friends under the table. I had inherited my mother’s alcoholism and added drugs to self-medicate and began sinking faster. The pain increased till it seemed the only escape to my pain driven, drinking and now behavior only had one way out.

I met a girl who brought me to church where I found out that Jesus was real. Once I surrendered myself to Christ, He delivered me from drinking and drugs, demon possession, a hemorrhaging ulcer and once I was surrendered, He then called me to preach in a audible voice. Once I received Jesus’s love I was mentored on how to live for Christ. As time went on, I came to realize that I was 20 years old and had no clue who Jesus is. What if I had been told when I was a child, what kind of life would He have done in me? I married a woman with the same vision and heart and had 3 children that doctors said could never happen. That opened me to figure out how to reach kids and families introducing them to the love of God.

That motivated me to be excellent at what we do therefore I would seek professional magicians, storytellers, puppeteers, and ventriloquists, and then I became trained by Ringling Brothers professional clowns to become a Master Clown. From that I created The Kid’s-Celebration Circus which I took internationally sharing the goodness of God’s love. We toured for 12 years full time 48 weeks a year and 20 shows per week.

Eventually medically, I had to leave the road and began starting churches successfully.

I taught seminars I wrote, 8 manuals/Seminars and trained in countless seminars and classes. I annually toured 48 weeks of churches, youth camps and school shows across America and were featured on TV, radio, magazines and podcasts.

In the Salvation Army where I serve as an Officer/pastor, one location the need required me to become trained in disaster response including being certified in Critical Incident Stress Management and Grief, Trauma and Loss by the highly respected author, trainer and responder, H. Norman Wright who then mentored me for 6 years. After all that training I then became an internationally dispatched trainer in all these topics empowering hundreds so they also could train lives in crisis.

I also ended up serving as Chaplain for Fire Departments, Police, Salvation Army disaster responses and hospital and institutional locations.

After serving for over 50 years, we retired and I began doing award winning photography and wrote my first internationally published book: “When the Doctors say NO! God says YES!!!” -

: My books draw on scientific training as a medical doctor, eight years of working as a psychiatrist, twenty-five years as a member of a growing church where I served on the leadership team offering pastoral care, and lived experience during a challenging decade marked by chronic illness, blood cancer, and unexpected losses.

My faith was often faint. I wondered if this was the end of my story. I was not strong enough to live for Jesus the way I wanted to. I could not change myself. And then hope reminded me:

Jesus doesn’t just give us time to change. He patiently helps us grow.

My journey is not one of miraculous healing, but of seeing my life crumble. Then, through a slow process of healing and rebuilding, I learnt:

What does this mean? This is Substack telling you, plainly, what it wants to become. And if you write on this platform, you need to understand what changed and how to work with it instead of around it.

The Feed Is Now the Front Door

The old Substack model was simple: you wrote, hit publish, and an email landed in inboxes. The inbox was the whole game.

Not anymore.

That row of profiles at the top of the app works exactly like Facebook stories. Follow a writer, and when they publish something new, their profile lights up with an orange dot at the top of your feed. Your readers don’t have to dig through their inbox or remember your name. You’re sitting right there, first thing they see, every time you’ve got something fresh.

What this means practically: consistency now has a visibility reward it never had before. Every time you publish, you reclaim that top-of-feed real estate. Go quiet for two weeks, and you disappear from the shelf while everyone else’s dots keep glowing.

The writers who treat Substack like a blog with an email list attached are going to fall behind the writers who treat it like what it now is — a social platform where the content happens to be worth reading.

You Can Now Choose Your Main Publication (And Switch Between Them)

This one matters for anybody running more than one publication, and a lot of us are.

Substack now lets you choose which of your publications is your main one, the one on display when somebody lands on your profile. If you run two publications, you’re no longer stuck with whichever one the platform decided to feature. You pick.

And it’s not a one-time decision. You can switch between publications, and — here’s the part that matters for your list — you can send emails out to whichever audience you choose. Two publications, two audiences, one dashboard, and you decide which hat you’re wearing when you hit send.

One more detail that saves a real headache: Substack preserves your handle if you switch over. Anybody who’s ever rebranded anything online knows the dread of losing the name people already know you by. That friction is gone. Your handle follows you.

If you’ve been hesitating to spin up a second publication because managing two felt like running two separate businesses — that excuse just got a lot thinner.

The Three-Title Trick Almost Nobody Uses

Now for the part most writers don’t know. I’d wager the majority of people publishing on Substack right now have no idea this exists.

Every article you publish can carry three different titles. Not should, can. And the writers who use all three are outperforming the ones who don’t.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Title #1: The editor title (this is your Notes title). The main title and subtitle you write in the editor stay exactly as you wrote them — and that’s what carries over to Substack Notes and the feed. This is the title your dot-tappers and scrollers see. Write it for people browsing.

Title #2: The email title. Go into your post settings before you publish, and you can write a different title for the email version. Here’s the kicker — Substack will send out different ones, and whichever title gets the most clicks wins. The platform is running a split test on your behalf. Most writers never touch this setting, which means most writers are leaving opens on the table. An email subject line and a feed headline are two different animals. The feed title can be bold and declarative. The email title needs to earn a click in a crowded inbox. Now you can write each one for its job.

Title #3: The SEO title. Also in your post settings, under SEO options, you can change the title that Google picks up. Your feed title might be punchy and personal — great for your readers, useless for search. Your SEO title can be the plain-spoken, keyword-honest version that someone actually types into Google at 11pm. Same article, now findable by strangers.

One article. Three titles. Three audiences. Your followers, your inbox, and the open internet — each one served on its own terms.

It takes maybe ninety extra seconds per post. Do it anyway. Worth the time.

What to Do With All This

If you take nothing else from this piece, take these three moves:

1. Publish on a rhythm. The orange dot is free advertising, but only if it keeps lighting up.

2. Set your main publication deliberately. Don’t let the default decide what new readers see first.

3. Write all three titles, every time. Editor title for the feed and Notes. Email title in post settings, and let the split test do its work. SEO title for Google.

Substack handed writers a social platform, a multi-publication switchboard, and a built-in headline-testing machine — and most people are still using it like it’s 2022.

You don’t have to be most people.
