The yellow building stands at the edge of the rainforest of British Columbia’s Pacific North-West—weathered boards washed in soft ochre, catching the muted northern light.  

On one of her walks with her Canadian Eskimo Dog on a day off from her and Monte’s lifeguard duties at the beach, Phina comes across an open gate she didn’t notice before. 

She slips through this and follows an old pathway. She discovers the yellow building. She is drawn to it. 

Inside, the air carries the faint scent of cedar and old paper. The rooms are small, warm, and practical, built by someone who understands both wilderness and solitude. Nothing is ornate; everything is purposeful. The windows look out toward the ocean cliffs, where fog drifts in like a curtain God draws across the morning. 

Phina spots an envelope lying on the floor beside a couch. She picks it up and reads the address. 

Swann & Son Detective Agency, but the return address had been wiped out with white ink. 

She can make out some of the words the whiteout hasn’t obscured. The return address sends chills through her. 

Then she hears something that frightens her. It sounds like one or two people moving in one of the dark, shadowed rooms. 

What intrigues her is Monte barks in the direction, not menacingly, but as if someone he knows well is there. 

Grasping the letter in one hand, and Monte’s collar in the other, Phina flees. Monte drags his feet and Phina has to stop. She looks back at the building and sees a man standing at one end of the building, another at the far end.  

She quickly escapes. 

For Phina, the building becomes more than a shelter. It is a place where danger cannot reach her, where she can breathe again, where families are reunited, and faith begins to settle in her like a steady heartbeat. The yellow building is refuge, restoration, and the quiet sign that her life has turned toward safety and love.

Picture this: new author. We’ll say her name is Ruth for the sake of this article. She spent six months writing a devotional. Even hired an editor and proofread it — over one hundred times. Then, two weeks before launch, she needed a cover fast. So she typed a prompt into an AI image generator, picked the option that looked the nicest, and uploaded it to KDP.

The week of book launch arrives, she’s excited, and she’s eager to see the fruits of her labor. So she waits.

Two weeks go by, barely any sales or visibility, and she has no idea why. On paper, everything else about her book was solid. So what gives?

Well, turns out, it may have nothing to do with her writing at all. It might have been the first three seconds someone spent looking at her cover.

You know the saying, “dont judge a book by it’s cover?” Ha, yeah. Unfortunately — people do.

Let’s talk about it.

What A10 Actually Changed

Amazon is dependent on a A10 algorithm engine. A lot of people have never heard about this. It replaced the older A9 system, and it doesn’t rank books the way A9 did. A9 cared mostly about sales velocity — how fast a book sold, especially right after launch. If you could push enough ad spend or enough friends buying copies in the first week, you could climb the charts even if the book itself wasn’t that great.

But the A10 model is different. It’s geared toward quality rather than quantity. If your book is ACTUALLY GOOD, Amazon pays more attention to it now. Here’s what I mean: the new A10 algorithm model now pays close attention to things like:

• Conversion rate — how many people who see your cover actually buy the book

• Dwell time — how long someone’s eyes stay on your cover before they scroll past

• Review sentiment — not just your star rating, but the actual words people use in reviews

• External traffic — whether you’re bringing your own readers in from email lists, social media, or your website — instead of relying only on Amazon shoppers

Read the last part again. And if you’re reading this from Substack, and you’re an author/creator — congrats because Substack is the attention arbitrage in the social media sphere right now. It is literally the perfect place to build an email list, an audience, and a website. The platform gives you ALL OF THAT — and more.

That’s all well and good, but here’s the kicker: none of that matters if the cover stops people cold before they ever click. Yes, I’m not joking. Your cover art matters that much.

Where AI Covers Fit In

Now, I’m not saying there’s some secret flag inside Amazon’s system that says “AI cover, downrank this book.” That’s not quite how it works, and it’s worth saying clearly so you don’t walk away thinking Amazon is out to get you.

What’s actually happening is simpler and, honestly, more human. Readers are getting good at spotting AI-generated art. The slightly wrong hands. The text that isn’t quite readable. The faces that look almost right but not really. Authors and marketers tracking A10 in 2026 describe this as the “uncanny valley” problem — a cover that looks close enough to professional work that your brain notices something is off, even if you can’t say what.

When a reader’s brain flags that discomfort, they scroll past. They don’t click. And every one of those scroll-pasts is data Amazon collects. Low click-through. Low dwell time. Low conversion. A10 reads all of that as “this book isn’t satisfying the search,” and it shows the book to fewer people next time.

So it’s not that AI covers get punished directly. It’s that a weak AI cover produces exactly the weak engagement numbers A10 is built to detect and bury. The effect looks the same to you as an author — fewer sales, lower rankings — even though the mechanism is different.

One more thing worth knowing: Amazon requires you to disclose AI-generated content during upload, including covers. Skip that box and get caught, and you’re looking at a much bigger problem than a slow launch.

What This Means for Your Next Cover

None of this means AI tools are off-limits. Plenty of authors use AI for early concepts, mockups, or brainstorming, then hand the final version to a real designer to clean up. The line isn’t “AI or not AI.” The line is whether the finished cover looks like something a reader trusts enough to stop scrolling for.

A few practical checks before you upload:

1. Zoom in on the hands, the eyes, and any text on the cover. These are where AI art breaks down fastest.

2. Show it to five people cold, with no context, for three seconds. Ask what they think the book is about. If they hesitate or guess wrong, your cover isn’t doing its job.

3. Compare it next to the top ten books in your category. Does it look like it belongs on that shelf, or does it look like it’s trying to?

4. If in doubt, get a human designer to finish it. A polished cover that converts well is one of the cheapest investments you’ll make relative to what it protects — your visibility on the platform where most of your readers are actually looking.

Ruth’s story doesn’t have to be yours. A10 rewards books that genuinely hold a reader’s attention, and that starts with the one image doing all the work before anyone reads a single word you wrote. Get that right, and the algorithm stops being something to fear and starts working in your favor.

It’s a Tuesday morning, the coffee is hot, the air is fresh, and you go to check your KDP dashboard. You worked hard on your book. You’re excited to see who bought it, and you want to know if your labor paid off. But scroll down to the royalty line and you see Amazon taking a cut — thirty percent off the top. No negotiations.

Many authors have just accepted this as the cost of being discoverable. But what if I told you, that isn’t true anymore?

The trend is already here

According to Written Word Media, thirty percent of working authors are already selling books directly to readers, avoiding Amazon entirely. And, get this, another thirty percent say they plan to start this year. YOU NEED TO BE PART OF THAT THIRTY PERCENT.

In addition, the authors making over ten thousand a month sell direct already.

Think about that. Top earners in the industry decided Amazon’s cut just wasn’t worth it anymore, and it paid off for them. The reasoning behind it is simple. They wrote an excellent book and Amazon takes a good chunk of their sales. Doesn’t matter how well written it was, or how loyal their readers are — Amazon gets a piece of the pie.

But when you do direct sales, having your own ISBN number, and distributing anywhere you want, you avoid the 30% tax. You set the price. You keep what’s left after printing and shipping. Nobody stands between you and the reader who already trusts you enough to be on your list.

So why hasn’t everyone done this already? Because the old version of “selling direct” meant building a Shopify store, learning inventory management, and hoping you could drive your own traffic to a website nobody’s heard of. That’s an entire business to run on top of writing books.

That version is dead now. DEAD. Oh, and the marketing creators still shouting about Shopify? You want to know why they are still beating that dead horse? It’s because Shopify PAYS to mention them in their YouTube videos, newsletters, and podcasts. Building a Shopify store in 2026 is literally the worst advice ever, and I’ll explain why.

Shopify only solves a problem you don’t have.

Shopify charges thirty nine dollars a month, plus transaction fees, for a storefront. That.Is.Ridiculous. That price makes sense if you’re starting from zero — with no audience, no traffic, and nothing but a product and a dream. Shopify’s whole pitch is: we’ll make you look legitimate and give you an app ecosystem to bolt on. Okay. That’s nice. But you’re still starting from zero and you still need to drive traffic to the website.

But here on Substack? You’ve already got a newsletter. You’ve got readers who open your emails and click your links because they know your voice. Shopify doesn’t send you a single one of those readers. It’s just a fancy online cash register — an expensive one at that — and they want thirty nine buckaroos every month just so you can “hope” to sell something.

You don’t have to do that here. Substack is basically a distribution engine that happens to also let you sell things. It pushes your writing through Notes, recommendations from other writers, and through its own discovery feed. People find you without you spending a dollar on ads. And connecting a custom domain costs a one-time fee of fifty dollars, plus whatever you pay a registrar for the domain itself. After that, there are no monthly fees. Nada. Zip Nothing ever billed again, except your custom domain — which is pretty cheap and affordable in most cases. I pay $12 a year for my custom domain:

So how do you make Substack your online-direct sales- bookstore? I’ll show you!

Step one: set up your Substack storefront

Start with a Substack publication. If you already have one running, you can build this directly inside it — you don’t need to start over.

Go into your settings and connect a custom domain. See the “related article” above if you need steps on how to do this.

This is a fifty-dollar, one-time step. Once it’s live, your publication has its own web address instead of living at yourname.substack.com, which matters for two reasons: it looks like a real bookstore to a new visitor, and it starts showing up in Google search results under your own name instead of Substack’s.

Your Notes feed and recommendation network stay fully intact after you connect a domain. You don’t lose Substack’s built-in discovery by going custom. You just add a layer of search traffic and branding on top of it.

Step two: get your own ISBN

This is important and a lot of authors miss this, so pay attention here. If you let Amazon assign you a free ISBN through KDP, that ISBN is locked to Amazon. You cannot use it to sell through print-on-demand, a bookstore, or anywhere else. That’s separate from KDP Select, which is the ebook exclusivity program — this is about the print ISBN itself.

The fix is straightforward. Get your own ISBN, either through your publishing imprint or purchased directly, before you set up your direct sales edition. That one decision is the difference between a book that can only ever live on Amazon and a book that can be sold anywhere you want, forever.

And, you can still publish to Amazon with your own ISBN.

Step three: connect print-on-demand fulfillment

This is where authors usually get stuck. Selling direct is one thing. Shipping a physical book to a stranger in Ohio is another thing entirely. Nobody wants to run a mailroom out of their house.

This is where a print-on-demand partner comes in, and it’s worth understanding exactly how it works, because it removes the one real obstacle standing between you and a functioning bookstore.

Nothing gets printed until a reader actually clicks buy. Here’s exactly how to get a title live on Bookvault, one of the platforms built for this.

How to upload your book to Bookvault

1. Create your account. Head to bookvault.app and click Sign-Up/Login. This gets you into your dashboard, where every title you publish will live.

1. Start a new title. From your dashboard, add a new book. You’ll be asked for the basics — title, author name, trim size, and binding type. Stick to paperback for U.S. direct sales, since that’s the format that prints domestically instead of routing through UK production.

2. Upload your interior file. This is your fully formatted manuscript, exported as a print-ready PDF. Bookvault checks it against your chosen trim size and page count automatically and will flag any formatting issues before you move forward.

3. Upload your cover file. Your cover needs to be sized to the exact spine width for your page count. Bookvault’s spine width calculator on their site can generate this for you if your designer hasn’t already built it to spec.

4. Order a proof copy. Before your book goes live for sale, order one printed proof for yourself. This catches anything a screen won’t show you — color shifts, margin issues, paper feel.

5. Connect your sell channel and go live. Once your proof is approved, Bookvault automatically generates a product page for your title through Bookvault Shop, their own hosted storefront. That page comes with its own shareable link. Copy that link and drop it straight into your Substack post as a hyperlink or button, wherever you want readers to buy. The moment it's live, your title is ready to sell.

When a reader buys, the order routes to Bookvault automatically. They print it, they package it, they ship it straight to the reader’s door. You never touch a copy. You never hold inventory. You never guess how many books to order and hope you don’t get stuck with a box of unsold copies in your closet.

For authors shipping within the United States, standard paperbacks print through a domestic print partner, which keeps shipping times and costs reasonable. The one exception is jacketed hardcovers — those still route through UK printing, which means a longer wait and a higher price tag for U.S. customers. Stick to paperbacks for your direct sales catalog and this isn’t an issue at all.

On pricing, there’s no flat percentage taken off the top. You set your own retail price. Your fulfillment partner charges you a print-and-ship cost based on page count and format. Whatever’s left over is yours. Getting a title live has a one-time setup cost of around twenty dollars per book. If you’re publishing a high volume of titles, paid monthly plans lower your per-book costs, but for most authors starting out, the free plan with the per-title setup fee is plenty.

Compare that to what a traditional retailer takes. Selling through a bookstore or wide retail channel usually means giving up thirty-five to fifty-five percent of the cover price before you see a dime. Direct sales through your own storefront is the highest-margin path there is, because nobody’s taking a cut just for standing between you and the reader.

Step four: embed the checkout link

Once your book is uploaded and connected, you’ll get a checkout link. Drop that link directly into your Substack posts — in a launch announcement, in your welcome post for new subscribers, anywhere a reader might be ready to buy.

A reader clicks it, pays, and the order fires off to fulfillment automatically.

What this actually looks like, start to finish

Strip away the jargon and the whole system is four steps. Start a Substack publication if you don’t already have one going. Connect a custom domain for that one-time fifty-dollar fee, which keeps your Notes feed, your recommendations, and your Google search traffic all working together instead of picking one or the other. Upload your book’s file and cover to your print-on-demand partner, and get your own ISBN if you haven’t already. Then embed your checkout link right into your posts, so a reader can go from reading your newsletter to holding a physical book in under a week, without you touching a single step in between.

That’s it. No warehouse or Shopify bill eating into your margin every month whether you sell anything or not. No Amazon standing between you and the reader who already decided they trust you enough to open your email.

Amazon still has its place — it dominates the market, and plenty of readers will still find you there first. But it doesn’t have to be where the sale actually happens. The thirty percent of authors already making real money outside of it figured that out first. The rest of us are just catching up.

Quick answer: A single manuscript can generate income through five channels: book formats (ebook, paperback, hardcover, audiobook, Kindle Unlimited page reads), wide distribution (IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, PublishDrive, Findaway Voices), content multiplication (translations, bundles), an email list (lead magnets, affiliate offers), and authority-building (courses, coaching, speaking, certification). Most authors only ever use the first one.

If you publish once, on one platform, in one format, chances are — it won’t go very far. But, most Christian Indie authors don’t want to build a business, they just want to write their book. Those are two very different things, and it’s the reason why a lot of authors get stuck in that gap.

What they don’t realize is, it’s just the first stop on a much bigger map.

So, where do you begin? By making one book, whether you’re an existing author or upcoming one, do more work.

To achieve this, you repackage one finished book across six areas: the formats you sell it in, stores you get it into, new books hiding inside it, the email list it can build, authority it earns you, and eventually — if you keep at it long enough— the income it turns into.

Here’s the whole map, walked one piece at a time.

Every format the same file can become

Start with the book itself, in every version a reader might actually reach for.

Kindle ebook first. Lowest barrier to entry, 70% royalties through KDP if you price between $2.99 and $9.99. It won’t make you a lot of money by itself, but every other format on this list starts from this same file.

Paperback outsells the ebook for most nonfiction and devotional titles, and it’s not close. Readers still want something they can underline, dog-ear, and hand to a friend at church. Turning your ebook into a paperback is formatting, mostly: adjust for print trim size, add a spine and back cover, upload. Budget around $40 total for someone to handle that.

Hardcover isn’t for every niche, but gift books and anything meant to sit on a shelf for years benefit from the option. You reuse the paperback manuscript. The only new cost is adjusting the cover margins for the thicker binding, usually another $10.

Then audiobook, and this is one Christian authors sleep on the most, which is strange because Christian audiences listen to things constantly. Long drives to church. Dishes. Laundry. Through ACX, narration runs about $70 per finished hour, and a 30,000-word book usually comes out to three finished hours, so figure $210 to $310 total. A modest audiobook brings in $50 to $100 a month once it’s live. ACX is currently open to authors publishing from the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland.

Last one in this group is Kindle Unlimited page reads. If your ebook sits in KDP Select, you get paid every time a subscriber reads a page, not just when someone buys the book outright. It’s a separate royalty line from your regular ebook sales, and it grows fastest on a book that actually holds someone’s attention start to finish.

Five income lines. One manuscript. Not a single new word written.

Formats at a glance:

• Kindle ebook — 70% royalties, $2.99–$9.99 price range

• Paperback — around $40 one-time formatting cost, usually the top earner

• Hardcover — around $10 on top of your paperback files

• Audiobook via ACX — $210–$310 to produce, $50–$100/month once live

• Kindle Unlimited page reads — passive royalty layer on top of ebook sales

Getting the same book into stores Amazon can’t reach

Amazon still dominates. It isn’t the whole market, though, and this next stretch is about getting the same formats in front of readers who never open the Amazon app.

IngramSpark sends your paperback and hardcover to over 40,000 stores, including church bookstores, Christian college bookstores, homeschool co-ops, and libraries. There’s no exclusivity requirement, so you can publish through IngramSpark the same day your files are ready on Amazon. Draft2Digital sends your ebook to Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo, though only once your ebook is out of KDP Select (Select requires exclusivity to Amazon in exchange for the page-read royalties and promotional tools). PublishDrive covers a lot of the same ground as Draft2Digital, plus a handful of stores Draft2Digital doesn’t touch, so it’s worth uploading to both rather than picking one. On the audio side, Findaway Voices and Author’s Republic both function as the audiobook equivalent of IngramSpark, sending your finished narration to iTunes, Google Play, Kobo, and various libraries, with a slightly different store mix between the two.

Timing matters more than people think. Run the ebook through KDP Select first. It gives your book a visibility boost on Amazon and unlocks free promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals while you push through your launch. Once sales taper off, and a common marker for that is somewhere under $15 a month, pull it out of Select and move it to Draft2Digital and PublishDrive. Paperback and hardcover don’t need to wait on any of that. IngramSpark has no exclusivity clause, so it can go live alongside your Amazon listing from day one.

Distribution channels at a glance:

• IngramSpark — paperback and hardcover, 40,000+ stores and libraries, no exclusivity required

• Draft2Digital — ebook, Apple Books/Barnes & Noble/Kobo, requires leaving KDP Select first

Turning one book into two, three, or four books

This is where a single manuscript becomes several books, each one able to run back through every format and every store above.

Translations first, and Spanish specifically. Spanish-language Christian markets are wide open next to English, where the keyword competition is brutal. Search Amazon for the Spanish version of whatever topic you write on and you’ll usually find a fraction of the listings you’d find in English, sometimes under 25 titles competing for a keyword that has thousands of English competitors. A translated book can land on page one without much marketing at all. Spanish first, then German, Italian, French, Portuguese if the first one does well. Hire a human translator, or use AI translation with a human editor reading every page (accuracy matters even more in devotional and theological content, so don’t skip that pass). Translation services usually run $1.29 to $1.39 per 100 words, editing included. A translated book counts as a brand-new listing to Amazon, which means it gets its own shot at everything in the two sections above.

Bundles work almost the same way. Once you have two or more books, package them into a box set. Readers see a bundle as a better deal than buying each title separately, and it costs you next to nothing, since every interior file already exists. The only new expense is a bundle cover. A bundle counts as a new listing too, so it can run through the format and distribution stages on its own.

A couple of things worth knowing before you build one: nonfiction bundles aren’t allowed on Draft2Digital, though they are on PublishDrive, and Audible allows only one bundle combination per set of titles. If you have three books, you can bundle A+B, B+C, A+C, and A+B+C as separate listings on KDP, but Amazon’s terms frown on duplicate-content abuse, so keep it to a reasonable handful.

Content multiplication at a glance:

• Spanish translation first — lowest competition, ~$1.29–$1.39 per 100 words

• German, Italian, French, Portuguese next, once Spanish proves out

• Bundles — near-zero cost beyond a new cover, counts as a new listing

• Bundle limits — one combination per title set on Audible, restrictions on Draft2Digital for nonfiction

What happens after someone finishes the book

None of this comes from reformatting anything. It comes from what happens after a reader closes the book.

Put a short call to action inside the book itself, a page offering a free checklist or a bonus chapter in exchange for an email address. The reader opts in, and now you have a way to reach them again instead of losing them the second they set the book down. The opt-in page that collects the email should stay dead simple, one offer, one form, nothing pulling attention away from the sign-up. Any email platform can build this in an afternoon.

Once someone’s on the list, you can recommend relevant products and earn a commission when they buy. A Christian parenting book might promote a family devotional. A financial stewardship book might promote budgeting software. Search “[your topic] affiliate programs” and you’ll usually find more than you expect. Realistically this stream sits around a few hundred dollars a month, but it’s close to fully passive once the emails are written.

If you already run a ministry, a consulting practice, or a service business, the book becomes a lead generator that funnels readers straight into what you already sell. If you don’t have anything like that yet, the list becomes the on-ramp into building a course instead, which is the next section.

Build the list even if you never touch anything else on this map. It’s the one asset that doesn’t live or die with any single platform. If your Amazon account has a problem someday, you still have your readers. If a bookstore drops your title, you still have your readers.

Email list mechanics at a glance:

• Lead magnet inside the book — free checklist, bonus chapter, or companion PDF

• Opt-in page — one offer, one form, no distractions

• Affiliate offers to the list — realistically a few hundred dollars a month

• Backend products — routes readers into your existing ministry, service, or course

Turning the book into influence

This is where the book stops selling copies and starts opening doors, and this section has the highest ceiling of the whole map.

If your book teaches a process (how to pray through grief, how to disciple your kids, how to plant a church), that process can become a paid course. You’ve already written the content once. The course just gives readers more structure and more direct access than the book alone offers. Consulting and coaching work the same way from a different angle. A well-written nonfiction book proves you know what you’re talking about before you ever open your mouth, and some readers finish it thinking, I don’t want to do this myself, I want to hire whoever wrote this. That’s the book doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

Speaking gigs can come straight out of a strong chapter. Some authors land repeat invitations off a single chapter that happened to hit the exact topic an organization was already looking for. And once you’re booking speaking engagements regularly, you can negotiate books into the contract itself, so instead of a flat fee, the host also buys a copy for every attendee. You get paid to speak, get paid on the books, and the book ends up in far more hands than an online sale would ever manage.

The one most authors never consider is certification. If your book teaches something other people could coach, train, or speak on, you build the materials once (a guidebook, a slide deck, a short course) and certify other people to deliver your content under your name. You’re not managing them as employees. Most certification models charge a one-time fee, often under $1,000, for the training itself, and the certified coach keeps whatever they earn coaching, speaking, or reselling the course to their own audience. This fits ministry-adjacent nonfiction especially well, recovery, discipleship, marriage, trauma healing, where the need for trained facilitators outstrips what any single author could reach alone. Start by building the coaching materials for yourself. Ask what would help you coach your own readers better, turn that into a guidebook and a slide deck, and only then think about whether other people should carry it too.

Authority streams at a glance:

• Online course — repackages what the book already teaches into a paid, guided format

• Consulting/coaching — readers hire you instead of doing it themselves

• Speaking — one strong chapter can become a recurring talk

• Books as a speaking-fee add-on — negotiate copies into the contract

• Certification — train others to coach or speak on your material, one-time fee model

The exit, eventually

Once a book, or a small catalog of books, is generating steady, documented income across all of this, the account itself becomes something you can sell. Digital publishing businesses tend to carry a healthier margin than most physical-product businesses, since there’s no inventory and barely any overhead once the books are live. This isn’t something to plan around on day one. It’s just worth knowing it’s there, at the far end of the map, proof that none of this was ever really about selling books one copy at a time.

What it looks like stacked together

Take one 150-page nonfiction book and run it through all of this. That single manuscript ends up as an English ebook, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook, with Kindle Unlimited page reads on top. It’s wide-distributed through IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, PublishDrive, Findaway Voices, and Author’s Republic. It exists as a Spanish translation with its own ebook, paperback, hardcover, and audiobook, running through that same distribution list a second time. It’s part of a bundle with the next book you write. It feeds a lead magnet, which feeds an email list, which sells affiliate products and whatever you build next. And somewhere in there it becomes the foundation of a course, a coaching practice, a speaking career, or a certification program training other people to carry the message further than you ever could alone.

Where to actually start

You don’t need every stream on this list, and trying to build all of it at once would sink you, mostly because you’d spend money on certification materials before you’d even confirmed the paperback sells. Work through it roughly in order. Prove the book in formats first, for a few months. Let what it earns fund the distribution stage. Start the email list early and let it grow quietly in the background the whole time, since it costs almost nothing and everything else on this list eventually depends on it.

• Marketing

• SEO

• Sales

Recently, I nearly doubled my revenue and tripled my subscriber count over this last stretch, and it had almost nothing to do with posting more. It came down to two things I got right: I built something authors genuinely wanted, and I knew how to sell it to them.

Now, whenever I say, “I knew how to sell it to them,” this isn’t me trying to sound like a sleazy car salesman. I’m not sitting at my desk, tapping my fingers, and waiting to take advantage of the next guy. Truth be told, I don’t really make a whole lot on Substack. I just utilize my prior marketing and sales experiences (11+ years) to help indie Christian authors. And yes, I charge for it because it takes time and effort.

That’s the honest version, now I’m going to give you the whole shabang. The exact build, the reason it converts, SEO/GEO (more on that below) tactics, and the discovery layer underneath that keeps it working. But let me start with the proof, because you should know this actually pays before you read another word.

So what are they paying for? Not clever writing. A placement that gets their books in front of readers/buyers. I built a bookstore inside Substack, something I’ve never seen another publication do, and turned it into a ladder authors pay to climb. That’s the heart of what I’m about to show you.

is an entrepreneur, speaker, and writer whose life has been shaped by a growing desire to walk with Jesus in everyday life. He served internationally with Food for the Hungry, completed his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University, and founded several technology companies.
