When Hope Comes: Discovering God's Character and Our True Identity through the Book of Ruth
by Donna Aust
✨ What It’s About
When Hope Comes explores the Book of Ruth through a historically grounded and contextually rich lens. Set during one of the darkest periods in Israel’s history, it follows an ordinary family through famine, exile, devastating loss, and grief. Along the way, we witness God’s hesed—His steadfast loving-kindness and grace—extended to two vulnerable widows: Naomi, a wandering Israelite returning to her God, and Ruth, a foreigner who embraces Yahweh for the first time.
Though God often works quietly behind the scenes, His presence, goodness, and redemptive purposes are woven throughout the story. As His character is revealed, our own identity becomes clearer. The hope God offered Naomi, Ruth, and ultimately all of Israel through Ruth’s offspring is the same hope He offers us today through His Son, Jesus Christ.
👥Who is this Book For?
When Hope Comes is for Christians who desire to go deeper into Scripture and better understand the historical and theological richness of the Book of Ruth. It is also for those exploring Christianity, as Ruth’s story beautifully reflects the larger biblical narrative—from brokenness and loss to redemption and hope through God’s grace.
🌅 The Inspiration Behind the Book
The inspiration behind When Hope Comes began with a simple desire to explore the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, especially as a mother of three daughters-in-law myself. But as I studied the Book of Ruth more deeply, the story unfolded into something far greater than I had ever imagined—a powerful picture of God’s providence, redemption, identity, and unfailing love woven through ordinary lives marked by loss, grief, and hope.
